Glenn Kaino’s Bridge, an homage to Tommie Smith’s Olympic protest, debuts at Smithsonian American Art Museum

On the 1968 Olympic Video games in Mexico Metropolis, American runner Tommie Smith ran 200 meters in an unbelievable 19.83 seconds. Previous to its arrival on the Smithsonian American Artwork Museum, Bridge exhibited on the Studio Museum in Harlem and Tempo Gallery. 

Along with Bridge, Smith and Kaino have journeyed on a years-long collaboration, producing artwork exhibitions and a documentary in response to their work. Smith has expressed gratitude for the sculpture’s position in persevering with his legacy: “A part of my physique is in Bridge, and I’ll endlessly be a part of the motion that my salute and that the work evokes.”
