In 2018, Karen Abernethy Interiors and Structure was approached to increase this residence for a household with three kids, who desired further areas that might not disrupt the constructing’s authentic character.

“The decision of increasing this residence, as required by the transient, with out interrupting the views, or the integrity of the present, comparatively ‘closed’ design was the most important problem of the challenge,” Karen Abernethy Interiors and Structure founder Karen Abernethy instructed Dezeen.

“Our answer was to carve two minimal pavilions into the rear of the positioning, on the ‘again’ of the coil,” she continued.

“The pavilions – one single storey and one double storey have been related to the outer pores and skin of the unique residence with glazed linking constructions that present a visible separation between outdated and new.”

To the north, the brand new two-storey quantity extends the lounge with a examine and extra bed room, whereas to the south the eating space is prolonged into the single-storey quantity, which incorporates a double-height household room and laundry.

Additional alongside the coil, the unique one-room width of the house has been maintained, stepping down in direction of three bedrooms that are related by a skinny hall.

The orientation of the extensions creates new views via to the central courtyard, the place a set of steps leads right down to a swimming pool on the backside of the backyard.

Materially, Karen Abernethy Interiors and Structure needed to set the extensions aside from the grey-painted masonry of the unique residence, and so used a standing seam steel cladding for his or her exteriors.

Inside, white-painted brickwork, travertine tiled flooring and uncovered timber ceilings create a minimal backdrop to the views of the backyard, that are framed by giant openings with bench seating at their base.

“The supplies chosen for the additions have been intentionally chosen to distinction between the brand new areas and the unique home,” Abernethy instructed Dezeen.

“The place the unique home was predominantly darkish colored masonry externally, we designed a customized mild weight steel zigzag cladding for the brand new additions,” she added.
