It’s not day-after-day an award-winning and architecturally-significant residence hits the market.

Designed by famend up to date architect Graeme Gunn, this late Nineteen Sixties Brutalist-style townhouse was forward of its time in home structure with its distinctive concrete block facade.

The attention-catching abode set amongst Kew’s lush panorama attracted present homeowners Judith Bateman and Ian Menzies to the property in 2001.

The couple, who weren’t seeking to purchase on the time, had been ‘overwhelmed’ by the structure and site of the property, falling for the three-bedroom residence immediately.

‘The outlook to the bush setting had me residing within the nation, whereas solely being 5 kilometres from the town,’ explains Judith. ‘The privateness of the property stood out. Though it’s a townhouse, the intelligent structure had us very cosily standing alone.’

Judith and Ian’s house is one among 4 townhouses on the block, but it surely enjoys an inviting sense of area overlooking the Studley Park bushland.

Inside, Gunn’s Brutalist design prioritises mild and area. Full-height glass doorways throughout the multi-level residence open it as much as the vistas past, so even the eating room (positioned on a mezzanine stage behind the lounge) doesn’t miss out.

The townhouse stays comparatively untouched, Judith and Ian having solely sympathetically up to date the kitchen and laundry with the assistance of architect Natasha Wheatland in 2012, and retrofitted double-glazed home windows within the decrease half of the house.

The outside, nevertheless, obtained a lush overhaul by panorama architect Chris Dance when the couple first moved in — now a inexperienced area for natives and extra inside the bluestone partitions.

‘The courtyard backyard off the kitchen is a mini oasis of palms and tree ferns, at all times feels tranquil and inexperienced,’ says Judith. ‘The western balcony is ideal for brunches with a view, or at evening for oysters and wine as we watch the bats head out from the river beneath.’

The calm and quiet of their beloved townhouse is what Judith and Ian will miss essentially the most, having determined to lastly promote it for others to take pleasure in.

1/76 Molesworth Road, Kew, VIC is listed on the market with Robert Le and James Tostevin from Marshall White and can go to public sale Saturday October 18, 10.30am.
