Completely happy Friday, GPODers!

I’ve been speaking loads about gardens slowing down this week. It’s exhausting for me to not acknowledge this as I look out on naked timber and useless annuals that desperately must be pulled from their pots, however I do know vegetation are nonetheless very energetic in southern gardens. Patricia Cranston despatched me a wonderful reminder when she shared these photographs from a latest journey to Atlanta Botanical Backyard. The extreme warmth of summer time has subsided, and there are nonetheless loads of colourful flowers and foliage to take pleasure in all through their many alternative gardens.

I spent a beautiful sunny day on the Atlanta Botanical Backyard final week and took some photographs that I hope my fellow GPOD readers will take pleasure in. The backyard has in depth open and woodland gardens, a vegetable backyard, a youngsters’s backyard, lavatory gardens, a tropical greenhouse, a desert home, and two orchid homes. You may simply spend a whole day there.

Mosaiculture canine manufactured from grasses (no, they aren’t useless!)

frog in garden pondMost of us have our eyes on vegetation when visiting botanical gardens, however these biodiverse locations are virtually at all times residence to a wide range of small wildlife. Preserve a lookout for critters, and also you is perhaps shocked by what you discover, like this frog totally having fun with the lavatory backyard.

mass planting of white pitcher plantsThis beautiful mass planting of white pitcher vegetation (Sarracenia leucophylla, Zones 6–8) is an instance of but another excuse to go to your native botanical backyard. This plant is native to Georgia, coastal Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama, and is endangered in some areas due to lack of habitat. Hopefully this distinguished planting encourages extra individuals to find out about this fascinating plant.

Patricia was fortunate to catch this show, because the timber will likely be shifting on to their subsequent location after they depart the gardens on January 11, 2026.

wild red banana inflorescenceEndangered natives are extraordinarily necessary, however I do know many individuals flock to public gardens particularly to see the exotics. Greenhouses and conservatories are at all times treasure troves of tropical vegetation at scales seen nowhere else exterior of the wild. For instance, this wild crimson banana (Musa haekkinenii, Zones 11–12) can flip your concept of bananas on its head. Somewhat than producing giant, candy fruit, it produces these great inflorescences, which small, closely seeded fruit grows from.

red bromeliadScarlet star (Guzmania lingulata, Zones 10–12) is a bromeliad, and one other daring crimson tropical. This can be a nice photograph to exhibit that the crimson “petals” are literally bracts, typically mistaken as flowers. The true flowers of this plant are small and white, and emerge from between these bracts.

small pink orchid bloomsAfter all, we are able to’t speak tropicals with out seeing not less than a few orchids. These Schlim’s slipper orchids (Phragmipedium schlimii, Zones 10–12) create fairly clusters of foliage round their delicate blooms.

white orchid bloomsLastly, a hybrid Miltoniopsis orchid (Miltoniopsis Lillian Nakamoto, Zones 10–12), which, with the black-bat-shaped marking within the center, would have match into our Halloween posts final week. It’s paired with an identical white moth orchid (Phalaenopsis spp. and cvs., Zones 10–12) alongside.
