Hello GPODers!

We’re again within the backyard of a frequent Backyard Picture of the Day contributor, Kathy Schreurs in Sheldon, Iowa. She has shared so many nice photographs of her backyard and the plant preparations she has created through the years (test a handful of these out, right here: Not Solely Violets Are Blue, Iowa Spring, Bringing the Outdoor In, Classic Wall Pockets Stuffed with Flowers, and Kathy’s Iowa Backyard), and at present she’s again with a take a look at what was blooming in July.

Good day, my title is Kathy, and I backyard with my husband in a small city in Iowa. I’ve loved submitting photographs prior to now to GPOD.

Our property, an outsized metropolis lot, is split into sections by picket fences that had been first constructed by a earlier proprietor a long time in the past. One part separates the entrance yard from the again, and I can see it from a kitchen window.

A view out to Kathy’s varied backyard segments, with the white picket fence that delineates the completely different sections simply barely in few behind the limitless streams of attractive summer time flowers.

Because the mailman stated just lately, “I like the scent of your yard.” So do I. The scent of summer time phlox (Phlox paniculata, Zones 4–8) and Orienpet lilies is superb! They’re particularly aromatic when the humidity is excessive and —that is Iowa in midsummer—it normally is!

Daisies pop up and peek by means of the phlox because the lilies start to fade away.

A peek over the fence on the yard in mid-July.

I cover some pots alongside the perimeters of the aspect yard backyard. This Kong coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides ‘King Kong’, Zones 10–11 or as an annual) and a pot of nicotiana are tucked up in opposition to the fence and visual after I come out of a aspect door.

A separate backyard space is a bit more orderly than the backyard view from my kitchen window, and a path runs by means of it.

The doorway to this backyard is bee and butterfly busy proper now. Each love the alliums. Should you look fastidiously, you may spot an Jap tiger swallowtail. The goldenrod simply past it’s going to quickly be a vivid yellow.

Across the 4th of July, Asiatic lilies add shade and pleasure. I like the Tango varieties.

close up of pink and white Asiatic liliesA better take a look at these lilies reveals off their stunning pink coloration. Should you look shut sufficient, you’ll discover little blushes of yellow as nicely… what a beautiful selection!

‘Truffula’ gomphrena (Gomphrena pulchella ‘PAST0517E’, annual) are dependable and hardy bloomers proper up till frost. And so they don’t thoughts that we’ve had little or no rain in July.

By mid-July the hydrangeas are opening, and the ‘Solar King’ aralia (Aralia cordata ‘Solar King’, Zones 3–8) has reached its full development for the summer time.

On the opposite aspect of the trail from the aralia, I’ve a cheerful group of annuals. This 12 months the birds gifted me with a larkspur (Consolida ajacis, annual)—there’s a patch of them within the yard—and it provides a pleasant exclamation level, I feel, to the low-lying annuals round it. July simply is perhaps my favourite season within the backyard.

Thanks for the flower-filled replace in your backyard, Kathy! All the time a pleasure to see the superb crops you’re rising, and hope to see among the superb indoor preparations you make with all these unimaginable blooms!
