Mentze Ottenstein creates space for “calm discovery” at Tekla store

A relaxing and pure materials palette of clay plaster, cherry wooden and wool characterise Danish homeware model Tekla’s retailer in London.

Positioned on Marylebone Excessive Avenue in west London, the house was designed by architect duo Mathias Mentze and Alexander Ottenstein of Mentze Ottenstein.

Having beforehand designed the model’s Trendy Romance exhibition at this 12 months’s 3 Days of Design and head places of work, Mentze Ottenstein aimed to convey a Scandinavian interpretation of British design to Tekla’s London retailer.

“British and Scandinavian design share an appreciation for pure supplies and craftsmanship,” Tekla founder Charlie Hedin advised Dezeen.

The minimal and neutrally toned house was partitioned by panelling and free-standing bespoke cabinetry, produced from European cherry wooden, which was supposed to create a retail expertise that encourages “calm discovery”.

The mushy wool screens, woven at an English manufacturing facility, divide the house, while blackened iron was used for hanging rails.

A big cedar wooden chest is displayed within the window of the shop, referencing a Swedish “bridal chest” historically used to retailer linens and quilts.

An oak parquet ground, initially hidden, has been restored, with unsalvageable patches stuffed with polished concrete, while impartial clay plaster strains the partitions.

The house has additionally been stuffed with collectible furnishings and objects, which, based on Mentze, “inform a narrative about Tekla’s inspirations and usher in some cultural context to the materials of the model”.

For instance, an Alvar Aalto 31 lounge chair has been positioned subsequent to a Pierre Chapo mattress, making a home feeling inside the retailer.

A gaggle of vessels by Irish ceramicist Sara Flynn, in collaboration with Tekla, are displayed in a glass-front bespoke cupboard.

Different initiatives featured on Dezeen by Mentze Ottenstein embody a Nineteenth-century Danish nation home renovated for Dinesen and a craft bakery in Berlin.
