Nestled within the coronary heart of Fremantle, Western Australia, Garde Resort is a celebration of the town’s wealthy port heritage and vibrant native arts group. The 83-room resort occupies a group of heritage buildings, together with former police quarters relationship from 1897 to 1903 and a 1978 addition by notable architect R.J. ‘Gus’ Ferguson. In reimagining these layered buildings, Matthew Crawford Architects developed a refined two-storey design that enhances Ferguson’s placing off-form concrete work, whereas venture architect Meyer Shircore translated the imaginative and prescient into detailed, buildable plans.
Foolscap led the inside design of Anglesea, the resort’s bar and restaurant, bringing Fremantle’s historical past and craftsmanship into each element. “Our interiors have explored the idea of craft and trade, that are the foundations of Fremantle’s port heritage, pure environment and its group of right this moment,” says Foolscap’s Perth director Renae Tapley.
The crew collaborated with native artists and makers to ensure that the design to keep up a reference to Fremantle. “As a result of we have now a studio in Perth and lots of of our crew grew up right here, we’re a part of the Fremantle group ourselves, which allowed us to work carefully and authentically with native designers, artists and makers,” says Tapley.
These makers embody ceramicist Gavin Carver, artist Jordy Hewitt, furnishings studio Pivello Terrazzo, and timber artisans Scarab Studio Wooden. Artbank’s partnership ensures Indigenous works, notably by Noongar artists, function prominently, enriching the cultural narrative.
Anglesea transitions effortlessly from day to nighttime. A breakfast bar alongside a communal blue-tiled desk serves resort visitors within the morning, whereas the area converts for night eating and drinks on the full-service cocktail bar. Regionally sourced timbers, bespoke furnishings, lantern-like ceilings and customized marquetry tables mix to create a heat, tactile setting that evokes Fremantle’s port and humanities historical past.
Sustainability and round design underpin the venture. Travertine offcuts had been repurposed in customized terrazzo tables and Australian-made sofas present sturdiness and flexibility, avoiding wasteful fastened joinery. Private touches, equivalent to hand-painted curtains and a ceiling sail by Jordy Hewitt, reference the town’s sunsets whereas concealing structural intersections, demonstrating the crew’s consideration to each craft and performance.
“We wished to collaborate with Jordy for a very long time and being a Fremantle native, this was the proper alternative. There are three totally different roof profiles conjoining within the Anglesea ceiling, so the sail helped to veil and conceal this. The result’s a gentle and delightful overlay that conjures the colors of the sunsets in Fremantle,” says Tapley.
The resort’s interiors proceed this narrative in visitor rooms, occasion areas, and the foyer, providing an clever, regionally rooted expertise.
“The project-at-large represents the perfect of Fremantle, Perth and Australia’s design group, and we hope it gives a platform for this to be championed and sustained lengthy into the Port Metropolis’s future,” says Tapley.
