After a day of demolition with my dad and some mates, I seemed round on the tiny, 27-square-metre, unliveable shell and thought, “Rattling, I hope this works out.” The house fitout that adopted – initially deliberate as a fast challenge to renovate and promote – ended up turning into my long-term dwelling, inspiring an architectural area of interest and a design philosophy.

As a uni scholar, I had all the time dreamed of doing one thing fascinating with a small house. After I purchased this house in a captivating Artwork Deco constructing in Darlinghurst, that long-held ambition kicked in quick. I trawled by means of each plan and video of micro residing I might discover, however most appeared extra centered on folding methods and transferring elements than on creating a real sense of house. I saved returning to the quiet ingenuity of tasks corresponding to Anthony Gill’s Potts Level Condominium and Nicholas Gurney’s Mighty Mouse studio, which proved that clever design might make even the smallest dwelling snug. From the outset, I wished my place to really feel calm, beneficiant and washed with pure gentle.

My purpose in redesigning the house was to have it perform like a one-bedder twice its dimension. The kitchen was shifted away from the prime window place to make room for a sleeping alcove constructed exactly round a queen mattress. A brand new, better-proportioned kitchen was positioned close to the entry, backing onto the toilet. I squeezed and jigsawed as a lot perform as doable into the smallest space to release a versatile, open space for residing. A devoted wine cabinet was a nod to my perception that small doesn’t imply compromising on luxurious, and the TV was designed to double as a pc monitor, permitting for work-from-home flexibility. A bit window between the sleeping alcove and residing house allowed gentle to be shared, making a higher sense of openness whereas nonetheless sustaining privateness within the bed room. Each element was refined, after which refined once more, to benefit from the house. It was a joyful change from engaged on giant, luxurious homes.

When the house was full, I reached out to photographer Katherine Lu to seize it. She was already effectively established in Sydney on the time, and I used to be thrilled when she agreed. The ensuing shoot marked the start of a permanent collaboration: within the years since, we’ve documented many extra tasks collectively and turn out to be shut buddies.

Wanting again, I used to be lucky with timing. The tiny home motion was gaining momentum, and Sydney’s property market was shifting from unreasonably costly into the realm of the unaffordable. Each traits meant the house struck a chord. It went on to obtain extra publicity than any challenge I’ve achieved since, profitable the 2015 Homes Award for greatest house and showing in a number of magazines (together with Homes 104) and movies. On the time, I used to be nonetheless working full-time in one other studio whereas additionally moonlighting on non-public jobs earlier than and after hours. I had quickly overcommitted myself, and beginning my very own observe turned the plain subsequent step.

Whereas the concept of the house captured the general public’s creativeness, individuals typically interpreted residing in a small house as a compromise that was solely doable due to the town’s facilities – in order that parks turn out to be your lounge, eating places your eating room, and the grocery retailer your pantry. I by no means actually favored that justification, as if small residing was extra about city planning than inside design. To me, a well-designed house, regardless of its dimension, ought to permit you to reside, work and loosen up, while not having to complement it with the general public house of the town. Darlinghurst Condominium did all three, internet hosting common gatherings with buddies, an after-after-party for the Homes Awards, and even a pop-up restaurant for a publicity stunt. Within the course of, it formed numerous fond recollections.

Seven years later, that preliminary second of doubt within the challenge was a distant reminiscence and my accomplice and I made a decision to promote the house. If it was not for COVID-19, we would have stayed longer. Even I’ve to confess, the best-designed micro house has its limits for a pair in a lockdown.

Although I mentioned goodbye to Darlinghurst Condominium, it left me with one thing extra useful than the house itself. It was the catalyst for beginning my observe and the blueprint for tasks that adopted, together with Boneca Condominium (2017). It formed an architectural method that embraces the restrictions of present buildings and sophisticated websites, and focuses on inner-city tasks the place high quality over amount is essential. Greater than something, it outlined our observe mission: to point out that housing of all sizes could be fascinating, not a compromise.
