UK studio Thomas-McBrien Architects has taken cues from minimalist artist Donald Judd when designing the interiors for a WatchHouse espresso store in Manhattan’s Flatiron District.
WatchHouse Park Avenue South is the London-based model’s third location in New York, occupying a nook unit within the former United Charities Constructing.
Within the 1,800-square-foot (167-square-metre) area, which seats 25, Thomas-McBrien Architects has utilized a contemporary palette of cherry wooden, stainless-steel and terrazzo between grand neoclassical pillars.
“The design establishes a relaxed, materially assured inside rooted in New York’s mid-century architectural language,” stated co-founder Barry McBrien. “Cherry timber, terrazzo, and hand-finished metal are used with restraint, permitting proportion and floor to form the ambiance inside the home.”

The cherry wooden panels cowl the partitions, line doorways and home windows, and type baseboards for cushioned built-in seating.
Darkish terrazzo flooring tiles lengthen via the linear procession of linked rooms, which separate areas for ordering and preparation from these for enjoyable and having fun with.

Within the first, polished metal service counters reference the work of artist Donald Judd and are lit from above by glowing rectangular pendants.
These lengthy cuboid parts run parallel to at least one one other via the center of the room and are topped with the gear utilized by baristas to craft the drinks and to serve pastries and lightweight bites.

One other counter, which is ready into the again wall, is accompanied by shelving above that shows metallic tins of espresso.
“The sculptural metal counters subtly reference the readability of Donald Judd’s early ‘Objects’, conceived as exact, industrial types that anchor the area,” stated McBrien. “The result’s an atmosphere the place the craft of espresso is elevated via structure.”

Visitors can eat, sip or work from fastened bar stools within the home windows, or from the forest inexperienced banquettes – each “harking back to the nostalgic American cafe” based on WatchHouse.
On the outside, russet-hued window awnings and matching outside furnishings subtly proceed the WatchHouse palette and branding with out detracting from the stone structure.

WatchHouse was based in 2014 and has a number of places throughout the UK capital, together with a modernist area within the Metropolis of London designed by EBBA – which was longlisted within the 2024 Dezeen Awards – and area beside the Millennium Bridge with interiors by Cake Structure.
