Hospitality operators Andrew McConnell and Jo McGann have unveiled Côte Basque, their first new restaurant since Gimlet. The venue is located on Crossley Avenue, Melbourne and holds a deep culinary lineage, having housed Pellegrini’s Tavola Freddo Cantina in 1954 and tremendous diner Becco from 1996. For its newest evolution, structure and design observe ACME was tasked with executing a delicate renovation, balancing historic preservation with a contemporary, up to date power.

That is the fifth time ACME, McConnell and McGann have labored collectively, having accomplished Gimlet and Apollo Inn in Melbourne, and Bar Miette and Supernormal in Brisbane. The design strategy at Côte Basque centres on honouring the constructing’s mid-century origins and retains and thoroughly restores the landmark’s unique Fifties inexperienced terrazzo flooring, heat cherrywood wall panelling, and characterful stainless-steel framed home windows angled towards the laneway.

Spatially, the venue makes full use of its present quantity, retaining its signature tiered eating room to create distinct eating zones and a heightened sense of theatre. The point of interest is an open wood-fired grill the place produce is cooked over flame and embers. Close to the doorway, a leather-lined bar serves as an anchor for informal eating, backlit by a hanging 12-metre bespoke mural by artist Magnus Reid, an Australian-born painter who initially constructed a profession as a chef in London. On the uppermost tier, a personal occasion area known as the Galleon Room might be curtained off.

Accommodating company throughout three distinct environments – 100 inside the primary restaurant and bar, 50 within the non-public room upstairs, and 24 seated continental-style alongside Crossley Avenue – Côte Basque thoughtfully reinforces Melbourne’s laneway tradition.
