I watched this Ted Discuss just lately which argues that new, modernist buildings are likely to abandon or overlook classes realized in older, extra conventional structure. When these classes are forgotten, the brand new buildings which are constructed are much less sustainable and thus have shorter lifespans.

Take cornices for instance. Cornices on (well-designed) conventional buildings are designed to information water away from the constructing so that there’s much less water erosion. Newer buildings preserve the aesthetic of a cornice however overlook the sensible operate of cornices, resulting in rather more erosion and a shorter constructing lifespan.

One other instance: porches vs glass partitions. Each buildings are in Charleston, SC on the identical avenue. The town will get actually sizzling and humid in the summertime, which is vital right here. The constructing with porches is extra sustainable as a result of the porches present shade to the partitions of the constructing, cooling the constructing. The newer constructing has giant glass partitions, which ends up in a greenhouse impact that heats up the constructing. This strains the HVAC and results in a much less sustainable constructing with a shorter lifespan.

My query: is the premise of the video proper? Do fashionable buildings ignore the teachings realized from extra conventional structure? Or is the video getting it improper? I do know now we have issues right now like LEED certification that promote sustainability.
