Black metal wraps the 570-square-foot retreat—full with an artwork house and bed room loft—on a rugged web site north of Reykjavík.

Homes We Love: Each day we characteristic a outstanding house submitted by our neighborhood of architects, designers, builders, and owners. Have one to share? Submit it right here.

Challenge Particulars:

Location: Nýp, Iceland

Architect: Studio Bua / @studio_bua

Footprint: 570 sq. ft

Builder: Eiríkur Kristjánsson

Structural Engineer: Klöpp Arkitektar-Verkfræðingar ehf

Civil Engineer: Sæmundur Eiríksson

Lighting Design: Bjarni Ingi Björnsson

Photographer: Marino Thorlacius / @marinothorlacius

From the Architect: “Located on a former farm with views of Breiðafjörður Bay in western Iceland, Nyp Cabin Atelier at Skarðsströnd follows Studio Bua’s earlier work on a compound of former farm buildings repurposed as exhibition house, a cultural heart, and a guesthouse.

“Our design temporary entailed creating an area that may function an artist’s workspace, a vacation house for the homeowners, and an impartial unit out there for visitor rental. Adjoining to the farmhouse, we recognized an current concrete basis that had as soon as supported a sheep shed, now misplaced resulting from excessive climate. Studio Bua had overseen the set up of a prefab greenhouse and shed on this basis. Choosing sustainability and maximizing current sources, we repurposed the concrete basis for this new addition, drawing inspiration from native vernacular structure and the unique farmhouse, the place we had beforehand prolonged the constructing to create further visitor rooms and an exhibition house.

“Given the time constraint to have the rental unit prepared for the upcoming vacationer season, we selected cross-laminated timber (CLT) for the construction and interiors, apart from the loos. Whereas the prevailing concrete basis was reused, a brand new concrete slab was poured, and the inside ground end adopted polished concrete to create a sturdy floor appropriate for an artist’s office. For the outside cladding, we opted for black corrugated metal from Greencoat.”
