Hello GPODers!

We spent the final couple days in PA, however right now we’re heading out west to take a look at Catherine Dickerson’s flower-filled SoCal backyard.

After transferring each 2 years my whole life, we lastly settled in San Diego 22 years in the past. We reside in a gardener’s dream local weather, and have been benefiting from it.

It’s such a delight to see everybody’s backyard pictures, and I’ve been desirous to share mine once more. Right here is our yard in summer season, previously a basketball court docket and garden with 5′ weeds.

My husband is named “the fuchsia man” by one of many grand dames of gardening right here in San Diego. He has 30 hanging baskets, extra in pots and the bottom, that he tends each day, repotting the hanging baskets each November.

fuchsia in hanging baskets under pergolaThe oldest is about 25 years outdated, a number of are of their early 20s. He designed the watering system so that they get just a little spray as typically because the climate requires.

fuchsia with impatiensExtra fuchsia hanging from a pine tree, complemented by impatiens. The vine alongside the highest of the fence is a trumpet vine (Campsis radicans, Zones 4–9) that grows vigorously however by no means flowers. Not sufficient solar.

entrance to rose garden with arborMy dad and mom made this solar collectively in 1971. It was enjoyable seeing them have such a great time collectively! My husband repaired it and my sister and I repainted it final summer season. Good for one more 50 years! The sting of our rose backyard, ringed by volunteer lobelia, is on the fitting. The brilliant pink flower within the entrance left is an in-ground fuchsia that will get about 8′ tall. I grew it from a single sprig. Crops are wonderful!

in-ground fuchsiaOne other in-ground fuchsia. We planted one small plant, and it has unfold with enthusiasm!

bright pink and purple cinerariaThese tall cineraria (Senecio stellata ‘Giovanna’s Choose’, Zones 9–10) from northern California are particular treasures. They reseed yearly, increasing their magnificence. The orange clivia alongside the fence are transplants from overgrowth within the entrance.

jacaranda treeWe purchased this jacaranda tree (Jacaranda mimosifolia, Zones 9–11) in San Diego after we lived within the LA space, and stored it in a pot. When my husband bought transferred to San Diego 22 years in the past, we introduced it with us. Not the best tree over a pond, however we take pleasure in it (the tree was there first)!

garden pond with waterfallInvoice put the pond and two streams in about 16 years in the past. It’s a deal with to observe assorted birds consuming and splashing within the waterfall. The strappy leaves on the fitting are darkish blue agapanthus that bloom late in the summertime. The little blue birdhouse was made by a 5-year-old good friend, and has been a contented dwelling.

dark blue agapanthusRight here is our again slope, with the darkish blue agapanthus in bloom. It’s my favourite! Slightly hydrangea is within the again left, a damaged pot of impatiens is tucked into the wall within the entrance, and lots of succulents are within the entrance proper.

polkadot plant with bergenia and ajugaThe polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya, Zones 10–11 or as an annual), bergenia and ajuga had been completely smashed to smithereens final October after we had the pine tree trimmed. Virtually obliterated. I feared they had been goners. Now when I’m discouraged, or a bit down, simply say “Be like a plant!”

It’s a pleasure to share my backyard with people who find themselves as enthusiastic about gardening as I’m! Joyful rising, everybody!

Thanks a lot for sharing your lovely backyard with us, Catherine! With a backyard us lush and flower-filled as this one, I’m positive it was well worth the wait.
