Ann Nichol’s residence and backyard in Oakland, CA, is inconceivable to overlook. Fortuitously, there may be ample avenue parking on her block to drag over and gawk and be impressed by the colourful waves of crops on her property.
When Ann and her husband moved into their residence in 1983, the property was stuffed with agapanthus, a number of camellia bushes and “tons and tons of crabgrass,” she says. After two years of clearing and amending the drained soil, Ann was able to make the backyard her personal. The one plant that survived the purge: a stately Canary date palm that has since quadrupled in top. “I hemmed and hawed over it for fairly some time, as I wasn’t eager on having a tropical backyard. Nonetheless, having determined to let it keep, I felt obliged to maintain it firm with different tropical crops.” Ann ultimately introduced in panorama architect Bob Clark, who recommended she divide the backyard into completely different ranges and rooms.
