We’ve lengthy admired the work of New York architects Messana O’Rorke, so after we inquired concerning the glass-wall extension and surrounding landscaping of a formidable venture in London’s Tufnell Park, we have been led to the work of panorama designer Joanne Bernstein. The venture is Bernstein’s personal property and when she took it on, the backyard was an deserted mess. The 120-foot south-east-facing backyard is shaded by the massive London Airplane bushes within the grounds of flats behind in addition to a bunch of established bushes throughout the backyard. The problem was to create a pure development from the sunlit part to the shaded part in direction of the rear of the property. Bernstein designed three backyard “rooms”, every with a barely completely different environment and texture however unified by hardscaping materials and a single sensibility in direction of planting.

With a earlier profession as an artwork historian and curator, Bernstein holds an curiosity in modernism and powerful geometry which proceed to translate into her backyard layouts together with a lowered palette of hardscaping supplies. That is all balanced with “exuberant textured planting of each perennials and shrubs with a naturalistic, barely wild, really feel to melt the arduous traces of the format,” she describes. Be a part of us for a stroll via Bernstein’s backyard.

Says Bernstein: “The primary three to 4 meters of the partitions nearest the home are taller than in the remainder of the backyard to offer extra privateness. The trellising provides extra privateness and the climbing crops now cowl the partitions and trellising each.” The pavers all through the backyard are Sawn York stone from Stone Heritage in Derbyshire. {Photograph} by Sarah Cuttle for Joanne Bernstein.
Messana O’Rorke played a key role designing an extension to support the transformed landscape. They extended a wall with a transparent cube made a glass steel frame and flat roof. The dining area is set on a two-level platform that steps down to a small terrace with pavers leading to a second terrace, defined with transitional planting and then into the back-most, shaded section of the garden.
