The winners of the 2025 Western Australian Heritage Awards have been introduced, recognising initiatives that display excellence in defending and reimagining the state’s various heritage.
Heritage Minister Simone McGurk commented, “The awards spotlight the dedication, creativity and keenness of those that shield and promote Western Australia’s heritage … This yr’s winners remind us that heritage shouldn’t be solely about preservation, it’s about connection, group, and pleasure of place.”
Chair of the Heritage Council of WA Darren Foster added, “Every winner demonstrates how considerate conservation and interpretation could make our historical past accessible and significant.”
Within the Conservation or Adaptive Reuse of a Native Heritage Place class, Perth Zoo (Gibbon Enclosure) was named the winner. Led by a collaborative group, together with architects Hassell and Iredale Pedersen Hook with Urbis as heritage architect and interpretation guide, the venture concerned a brand new primate crossing and gibbon enclosure together with the conservation and interpretation of historic constructions on the zoo, which is formally recognised on the Metropolis of South Perth’s Heritage Record.
