In the course of the Second World Conflict, New Westminster turned a hub for troopers from everywhere in the nation ready to be transferred to different bases or shipped abroad.
Heritage New West is celebrating this legacy, and honouring the eightieth anniversary of VE-Day on Might 8, with On the Homefront theme for this yr’s
New Westminster Heritage Properties Tour
on Might 25.
Tales of native troopers who died or have been killed through the conflict might be showcased within the houses that they grew up in. Troopers just like the brothers Mayo and Bruce Barber, who have been raised on Hamilton Avenue.
“It’s very poignant,” says Catherine Hutson, director of Heritage New West.
“There wasn’t any thought however, ‘We’re going to enroll and do that.’ And numerous them didn’t come again. The conflict modified the dynamics of neighbourhoods for years to return.”
The tour options each privately owned heritage houses and wartime areas. The latter embrace the Armoury, the Royal Westminster Regiment Museum (previously the Gun Room on the Armoury), and Westminster Membership, now Galbraith Home.
“The Westminster Membership was this wonderful Victorian home from the Eighteen Nineties,” Hutson says. “It was a vacation spot for returning troopers. They may have espresso, play pool, unwind. It was simply down the road from the Armoury, which was one of many busiest depots in Western Canada.”
Displays on the Royal Westminster Regiment Museum will embrace images, uniforms, medals, weapons, and uncommon artifacts alongside a memorial case honouring fallen troopers, and profiles of seven native troopers.
The tour takes place from 10 a.m. to five p.m. at a number of heritage places throughout New Westminster. A ticket guidebook — serving as a tour passport and map — is required for entry and should be picked up prematurely at Royal Metropolis Colors (700 Twelfth Avenue, New Westminster).
Tickets are $45 and accessible through
Eventbrite
Proceeds from the tour help native heritage initiatives.
