Stunning Hand-Crafted Concrete Planters by the Lebanese Artist

I’ve been on the hunt for clever vases all summer time—and I feel I’ll have simply discovered the proper ones. Once I noticed the work of artist Danya Ahmed, of Grey Gardens Plant Studio, I used to be instantly captivated and wanted to study extra. Initially from the US, Danya relocated to her ancestral homeland of Lebanon, the place she now handcrafts gorgeous sculptural vases, planters, and bowls that embrace uncooked and brutalist components.

Danya approaches concrete very similar to one would with clay, forming and sculpting it by hand. “Combining the power of the fabric, with the sensitivity of the hand, every bit is imbued with its personal power. The vases are an incredible instance of this power and sensitivity. They’ve the hand-formed, tactile marks of the maker and their softness is balanced by their encumbered, brute power,” she says.

When Danya lastly began Grey Gardens, she centered on potted vegetation. “I used to be making the planters and in addition planting in them, the pot and the plant had been one entity. Creating the planters, taking part in with the fabric, texture, form, proportion and coloration, as all of them mixed in relation to the plant was fairly thrilling for me. It was enjoyable to create for, and reply to, a dwelling factor—one thing already in existence and pure. The colour palette utilized in all of the work is ten years within the making. After a lot experimenting and making an attempt out new colours and placing them in context with vegetation, she nonetheless continues to discover. “I introduce new colours seasonally,” she says. “And these keep in manufacturing for shorter intervals of time, as one thing enjoyable to play with.”
