Because the menu focuses on “Japanese sushi from a Californian angle”, Guénaire drew on Japonisme – the Western fascination with Japanese design – for its inside.

“I drew on every thing that has marked me from these two nations that I like,” Guénaire, who runs Nightflight Studio, advised Dezeen.

The American affect comes throughout within the shapes used to brighten the inside, which options vibrant ceiling domes which might be lit from the within.

“From California, I took these unimaginable obliques that make me soften,” Guénaire mentioned. “The type you discover in Frank Lloyd Wright or John Lautner’s work.”

“A slant that recollects the Native American tent, the primordial shelter,” he added.

“American modernists beloved Japan and typically, they’d by no means even been there. It is this Japonism that I wished to extend.”

On the centre of Matsuri is the kaiten – conveyor belt – on which the sushi comes out. The designer used wooden all through the restaurant and coated it in lacquer for this centrepiece.

“The kaiten is roofed in high-gloss lacquer, paying homage to the attractive lacquer worshipped by the Chinese language after which the Japanese,” he mentioned.

“I used wooden all through as a result of in Japan, every thing is manufactured from wooden, that is simply the way in which it’s and must be!”

Pastel-hued domes adorn the ceiling above the kaiten, creating smooth lighting and including a contact of color to the primarily white and wooden inside.

“For the ceiling, I believe I acquired the thought from the superb ceiling of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Penfield Home,” Guénaire mentioned.

The color was toned all the way down to create the suitable ambiance for the restaurant.

Guénaire additionally designed chairs for Matsuri that draw on these present in conventional Izakayas – Japanese pubs – although he says the unique ones do not correspond to his recollections of them.

“Whereas trying to find photographs of Izakaya, I by no means discovered this chair form,” the designer mentioned.

“But, as I recall, it is precisely this chair that I’ve seen in every single place. All small and cute,” he added.

“Possibly that is what Japonism is all about. You invent rather a lot once you suppose you are bringing again recollections.”
