Danner Memorial Window

Sotheby's

Tiffany glass is among the many most treasured jewels of the ornamental arts world, whether or not it’s within the type of an iridescent vase, a leaded lampshade, or, rarest of all at auctions, a monumental window. For the primary time, Sotheby’s public sale home is providing a Tiffany window in a advantageous artwork night sale. The Danner Memorial Window, made for First Baptist Church in Canton, Ohio, in 1913, is about to promote at Sotheby’s Fashionable Night Public sale in New York on Nov. 18. With a presale estimate of $5,000,000 to $7,000,000, it’s anticipated to interrupt the document value for a Tiffany window, far surpassing the $1.9 million its proprietor Allen Gerry paid in 2000.

The “Tiffany Ladies.”

The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of Artwork

The window, commissioned in honor of John and Terressa Danner of Canton by their niece, Mrs. Annie M. McClymonds, is one among Tiffany Studios’ masterpieces, with vivid colours and detailed panorama. It was designed by Agnes Northrup, who began working for Tiffany Studios within the Eighties and is understood for her window designs that includes flowers, gardens, and nature scenes. She was one of many many ladies, referred to as “Tiffany Ladies,” employed by Louis Consolation Tiffany to pick out and minimize glass and create designs. Lately, many Tiffany Ladies, reminiscent of Clara Driscoll, have been acknowledged for his or her function within the studio’s work.

The public sale comes at a time when Northrop is receiving extra consideration. Final 12 months, the Metropolitan Museum of Artwork acquired a three-part Tiffany window, Backyard Panorama, designed by Northrop for “Coal Queen” Sarah B. Cochran. The museum already has one among Northrop’s drawings for the design of their assortment. In its personal method, Sotheby’s public sale can also be recognizing Northrop as a real artist. The remaining tons within the Nov. 18 public sale are artworks from the late nineteenth to the twentieth century by artists like Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Rene Magritte. With the Donner Memorial Window showing on this public sale, Northrop is given a spot amongst these trendy visionaries.
