From the Designer: “After the pandemic, a consumer secured a distant job to construct a house in Vedanthangal for his household to flee from the chaos of Chennai. The home was to be the antithesis of artificially cooled air and the plastic partitions of company life; a house rooted in local weather and place.
“The untouched vegetation and aquatic crops keep the chook sanctuary in Vedanthangal as one of many nation’s oldest protected areas. A house in a weak ecosystem needed to be a respiration edifice, born of the earth, slowly ebbing into the soil. Close to the indigenous building practices of mud structure and courtyard homes, our design method was grounded in historical past and equally trendy for town dwellers to adapt. The shell needed to enable the gaze to penetrate the surfaces, bear witness of age and historical past on its pores and skin, and withhold the openness of the consumer in its structure.
“Amid a cluster of family-owned homes, the north-facing rectangular web site belongs to a borderless neighborhood with the one true boundary being the thinnai—a raised, lined veranda intrinsic to Tamil households. This house, the place the household chats with neighbors and canine, serves as the center of belonging.
“The plan has three zones: The communal areas—thinnai, front room, and courtyard, and the extra personal kitchen and bedrooms are linearly organized such that each house is visually related. On the core of the home is a courtyard. A wall curves by the amount of the courtyard and shelters the west from harsh solar. On the east, the curve extends to the roof, forming an open house to bask within the morning solar. The perforations within the curve let the solar forged patterns on the earth-like oxide flooring and bathe rain into the courtyard. The river rocks within the courtyard are mnemonic objects, paying homage to the river flowing close by. The curve, greater than a sculptural ingredient, is a play wall to climb as much as the roof and lie again, watching clouds drift by. The courtyard invitations not simply the household, but additionally birds, bugs, canine, and cats, turning the house right into a sanctuary for all. Right here, the house celebrates the local weather’s veracities—naked toes on cool, damp soil, raindrops from the open roof, stargazing at a transparent blue sky—respiration life into the narrative.”
