Stalwart oak leaf hydrangeas produce panicles of creamy bracts in mid summer time, which keep on the shrub so long as early fall, the clusters turning steadily pink, then sepia. The Southeastern native shrub is hardy from zones 5 to 9. (See Hydrangeas: 10 Greatest Flowering Shrubs to Develop.)

Like elderflower and ninebark, Virginia sweetspire is one other of the native shrubs with white flowers that tolerates dense or damp soils. 15. Carolina Allspice

Above: Calycanthus ‘Venus’ has waxy white flowers.

Whereas native species of Carolina allspice (additionally referred to as sweetshrub) have pretty small burgundy flowers, the big and aromatic ivory petals of the Calycanthus hybrid ‘Venus’ cultivar start to unfurl in mid-summer and persist for weeks, blooming even in shade. The shrub is hardy from zones 5 to 9.

16. Clethra

Above: Plant a Clethra shrub (or hedge) and luxuriate in late summer time bee safari.

The sultry, clove-like scent of candy pepperbush—Clethra alnifolia—indicators the final days of summer time, and the turning of the 12 months. The native shrubs compensate by producing copious spires of flowers which are irresistible to bees and butterflies. Shade gardeners rejoice: Like hydrangeas and a few viburnums, this can be a shrub with white flowers that may bloom in dappled and excessive shade. Clethra is hardy from USDA zones 3 to 9.
