Gensler and OBJ reimagine Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts

The Avenue of the Arts, a 1-mile stretch of South Broad Road in Philadelphia, is present process a significant $150 million transformation by Gensler and OJB.

Ten blocks between Philadelphia Metropolis Corridor and Washington Avenue can have new landscaped medians, enhanced lighting, outside efficiency areas, rotating public artwork and sculptural components, plantings, timber, road furnishings, artist-designed banners, higher wayfinding, and extra as a part of this system.

“By prioritizing individuals, this transformation turns infrastructure into expertise. It’s a mannequin for the way cultural corridors can help local weather resilience, financial vitality, and on a regular basis life in a Twenty first-century metropolis,” Oliver Schaper, principal at Gensler and mission lead, mentioned in an announcement.

Building broke floor this week on the mission steered by a nonprofit group, Avenue of the Arts, Inc. The objective is to rework this part of South Broad Road right into a world-renowned cultural vacation spot stocked with verdant inexperienced areas.

The initiative to rework South Broad Road was launched many years in the past by former Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell. It introduced high-profile buildings just like the Kimmel Heart for the Performing Arts by Rafael Viñoly Architects, a brand new residence for the Philadelphia Orchestra. Now, the hassle to jumpstart the initiative is named AveArts 2.0.

After Philadelphia’s College of the Arts closed in 2024, its 9 buildings went up for public sale. Scout, a neighborhood growth and design firm, acquired two of the buildings: Dorrance Hamilton Corridor and Furness Residence Corridor, named after its architect, Frank Furness.

Scout is remodeling these buildings that span the Avenue of the Arts into the Village of Trade & Artwork—a brand new artistic vacation spot that may host AIA Philadelphia, BlackStar Tasks, Neighborhood Design Collaborative, DesignPhiladelphia, Monument Lab, the Stained Glass Challenge, and different teams.

Exterior Dorrance Hamilton Corridor, a brand new plaza for concert events, performances, and leisure will abound. The median outdoors the Kimmel Heart can have new plantings and public artwork.

The mission by Gensler and OJB will happen over the subsequent decade in two phases.

On January 30, work will start outdoors the Kimmel Heart on the block between Spruce and Pine Streets. It will deliver new lighting, a rainwater assortment cistern, and a raised, landscaped median speckled with native timber and plantings.
