All week, we’re republishing a few of our favourite Backyard Visits which have a private connection to our writers. No public gardens right here, no huge estates, no professionally designed landscapes—simply the backyards, vegetable patches, and flower beds that remind our writers of house. This story by Gardenista founder Michelle Slatalla is from 2017.

Whether or not it’s a brand new patio or a whole backyard overhaul, any landscaping venture can shortly outgrow its funds except you intend forward. I communicate from expertise.

Within the six years since I moved into my home on a small lot (0.15 acres in downtown Mill Valley, California), I’ve modified practically each facet of the outside area, from the yard to the entrance backyard. The upgrades included a brand new patio, backyard beds, paths, a gate, and a privateness hedge. Each step of the way in which, there have been selections to make on the place to splurge and the place to avoid wasting.

As with most budgets, mine required extra saving than splurging. Listed here are the highest 10 methods I saved cash on panorama design with out reducing corners.

1. Don’t toss; remodel.

My backyard gate is a repurposed vintage iron trellis, which we discovered leaning against the facade soon after we moved to the house and began to liberate the garden from years of overgrowth.

“Don’t toss; remodel” is a lesson I realized from my pal Jean Victor, who wrote the chapter on Professional Recommendation: Backyard Design in our Gardenista guide: “Keep away from the temptation to tear out and discard every part in your present panorama,” Jean recommends. “Repurpose bricks from a planter for a brand new pathway; use outdated fence pickets to make a gate; dig up hardy perennials and transfer them to a brand new mattress.”

2. Embrace the slippery slope.

Rather than trying to change the grade of my sloping front garden, I planted perennials and grasses that would accentuate the lay of the land.
