Positioned near Blenheim Property in Oxfordshire, the rectory was initially constructed within the seventeenth century and is neighboured by a stone barn relationship from the mid-18th century.

Prest Vale Architects was tasked with uniting and increasing this historic ensemble, extending the primary residence, changing the barn right into a visitor annexe and flattening out a banked backyard that had beforehand blocked daylight and views.

“The start line was actually about reconnecting the home with its panorama, whereas introducing a brand new gable that seems like a pure subsequent chapter inside the current ensemble of buildings,” studio co-founder Richard Prest advised Dezeen.

“This additionally enabled us to rethink the connection between the home and the panorama, so we embedded the extension into the topography and used adjustments in degree to convey the planting as much as the home windows,” he added.

The present rectory’s southern facade was outlined by a row of three Cotswold stone gables, that are topped by a weathervane, chimney and a belfry window.

Persevering with this formal language, Prest Vale Architects housed the extension inside an adjoining gabled type, topped by a stone sundial.

This extension incorporates a kitchen connected to an expanded eating space, flanked by a retailer and rear entrance to the north, and a examine that initiatives to the south with a big sit-in window surrounded by planting.

A steep financial institution that had blocked views from the rectory’s southern home windows was flattened as a part of a backyard scheme by panorama architect Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, with a ha-ha – or sunk fence – launched to separate the backyard from the adjoining discipline.

“The present silhouette has developed over 300 years, so we wished the extension so as to add to that evolution,” added fellow co-founder Michael Vale.
