One of Louis Kahn’s Protégés Designed This $1M Pennsylvania Midcentury With a Koi Pond

Within the Philadelphia suburbs, the 1957 residence by Carlos Joseph Alvaré has 10-foot partitions of glass, uncovered Douglas fir beams, fieldstone facades, and a lush, Japanese-inspired backyard.

From the Agent: “The Rhode Residence is a remarkably preserved single-story midcentury-modern gem in Rydal, Pennsylvania, being provided on the market for under the second time because it was designed and inbuilt 1957. Situated in Abington Township, exterior Philadelphia, the house was designed by Cuban-born architect Carlos Joseph Alvaré (1924–2017), who labored beneath Louis Kahn from 1947 to 1951. Alvaré studied structure at Yale and the College of Pennsylvania, with connections to Oscar Niemeyer and Le Corbusier throughout his training.

Influenced by Kahn and different up to date modernists, Alvaré designed award-winning properties characterised by facades of Pennsylvania fieldstone, open-flowing layouts, uncovered structural components, customized millwork, expansive home windows, and dramatic ten-foot partitions of glass that join the interiors to the pure panorama. His work additionally emphasised considerate siting, pure gentle, and Japanese-inspired panorama design.

Commissioned by Meyer and Rhea Rhode, longtime patrons of Philadelphia’s arts neighborhood, the Rhode Residence is likely one of the most interesting surviving examples of Alvaré’s residential work. The house sits on a personal, professionally landscaped 0.72-acre lot and retains lots of its authentic architectural particulars, alongside updates to the roof, mechanical techniques, kitchen, loos, electrical system, flooring, lighting, and landscaping. At the moment owned by an expert artist, it has been meticulously preserved.

Largely intact midcentury-modern properties by a Kahn protégé which might be linked to Philadelphia’s modernist custom are more and more uncommon. The Rhode Residence gives a chance to expertise a big and well-preserved instance of the area’s postwar residential structure.”

Architect Carlos Joseph Alvaré designed the home in 1957 after working under Louis Kahn from 1947 to 1951. Alvaré earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Yale and later studied at the University of Pennsylvania. At Yale, Oscar Niemeyer advised his senior thesis, and Le Corbusier judged his final project.

Ten-foot walls of glass bring the surrounding gardens into the dining area, while original exposed Douglas fir beams and original tongue-and-groove ceilings run throughout the main living spaces.
