In a metropolis the place renovations typically go fashionable and open-plan, Caroline Haselden knew she needed one thing completely different for her household’s circa-1926 Dutch Colonial.

“As a lot as I can respect and admire a West Coast fashionable esthetic, I knew that I needed one thing to mirror extra of who we’re,” says Haselden. “One thing a little bit extra eclectic and blended.”

Haselden and her household had moved from the U.S. just a few years prior. They purchased properties in Vancouver and Whistler across the identical time, then turned to native inside designer Gillian Segal to renovate each.

“It was a extremely fascinating and enjoyable train, working with the identical consumer on two initiatives in two completely different places on the identical time,” remembers Segal. The Vancouver home was lots the mission by itself: a 4,000-square-foot character house within the metropolis’s Shaughnessy neighbourhood.

It was the sort of place that appealed immediately to a household with a wide-ranging backstory and a gentle spot for older properties. Haselden grew up in Mississippi, and her husband hails from Charleston, South Carolina. They’d additionally lived in New York for a decade earlier than relocating to B.C.

In the secondary seating area, a bespoke maroon velvet sectional by Gillian Segal Design & FFab brings a sculptural edge, set against soft neutrals and anchored by a Krane pendant from Roll & Hill. With millwork and mouldings painted in Farrow & Ball’s Green Smoke, the dining room pairs a Lindsey Adelman chandelier with striped Lawson Fenning chairs, set around a weighty, rectilinear table.

“We’ve by no means purchased or constructed a brand new development, and we’ve completed initiatives in varied locations within the 21 years we’ve been married,” says Haselden. “I identical to the character … I feel it makes areas distinctive.”

Segal got down to carry the house as much as “fashionable residing requirements,” making it extra purposeful for the couple and their three youngsters plus canine, whereas holding onto the character they’d fallen for within the first place.

On the primary flooring, that meant forgoing an open plan: the house’s residing and eating areas retain their unique, partitioned configuration. Additionally intact are unique oak flooring with walnut inlays on the primary degree. “We needed to maintain the unique flooring, although they’re not excellent … [Gillian] completely acquired that,” says Haselden.

To take care of an unusually lengthy front room, Segal carved out two sitting areas that go well with how the household likes to chill out and entertain, making a cohesive area with “conversational groupings.”

“When you might have a celebration and you’ve got 20 individuals over, you’re not sitting round in a circle; you’re having little offshoot conversations,” says Segal.

The primary cluster centres round a customized fluted Masana Stone fire. A speckled velvet loveseat, veined marble aspect desk and an nearly medieval-looking steel sconce punctuate an in any other case gentle palette of lotions and greys.

The second grouping, backing onto the primary, feels extra playful, with an artwork deco-leaning maroon velvet sectional, rose-toned accents and a swooping Krane pendant mild from Roll & Hill.

In a sunlit lounge space, low-profile blue armchairs from Inform Interiors centre around a round coffee table, flanked by bay windows and softened by a mix of vintage and custom pieces. The home office is colour-drenched in Farrow & Ball’s Oval Room Blue No. 85, with built-in millwork, sheer drapery and a contemporary take on a bearskin rug by Christopher Farr.

A sunlit lounge space extends off the lounge, with 4 low-profile lounge chairs organized round a spherical espresso desk, bordered by bay home windows. A customized buffet enhances an vintage iron backyard cart — now a bar – which Segal noticed and picked up on a visit to L.A.

“Gillian loves to combine newer issues with previous issues, and he or she was actually good at discovering classic items,” says Haselden.

The interaction of previous, new and offbeat continues in a tiny powder room, the place chocolate-hued grasscloth wallpaper meets classic Murano glass sconces. A starkly veined marble sink attracts focus, set off with an identical window body. “We solely actually had room for this teeny, tiny wall-mounted sink. So we determined to make it probably the most fabulous wall-mounted sink that we may,” says Segal.

“We only really had room for this teeny, tiny wall-mounted sink. So we decided to make it the most fabulous wall-mounted sink that we could,” says interior designer Gillian Segal about the powder room.

The eating room injects a dose of color, with millwork and mouldings painted a dusty inexperienced (Farrow & Ball’s Inexperienced Smoke), towards a textured cream wallpaper. A slender Lindsey Adelman chandelier and striped Lawson Fenning eating chairs set off a weighty rectilinear eating desk.

Upstairs, Segal and crew reconfigured the structure to create extra environment friendly areas and storage. Within the main suite, customized millwork tucks into sloped ceilings. Low bouclé armchairs, breezy drapes, a muted geometric rug and over-draped mattress linens give an air of unstudied calm.

In the primary bedroom, soft layers and custom millwork create a quiet retreat. Taking advantage of an awkward angle, custom millwork tucks into sloped ceilings. Low bouclé armchairs, breezy drapes, a muted geometric rug and over-draped bed linens create a feel of casual calm. In the primary ensuite, custom fluted plaster echoes the living room fireplace, while Fantasy Gold quartzite – fabricated by SSC Countertops – tops the vanities and frames a recessed shower alcove, with matching Apparatus Studio fixtures adding a subtle art deco note.

Shifting into the first ensuite, the texture is extra formal. Customized fluted plaster particulars echo the lounge fire, including texture to a layered palette of cream and gold. Bevelled quartzite counter tops high conventional cabinetry with gold {hardware}, paired with artwork deco-inspired lighting fixtures.

Framed by a stone arch and enclosed with glass, the bathe reads like a hidden alcove – a up to date nod to the sort of built-in bathing niches present in some historic properties.

“Once more, we actually have been simply making an attempt to strike this steadiness between a nod to the [character] of the house and conventional detailing by way of a extra modern lens,” says Segal.

This steadiness holds all through the house. A couple of years on, it’s what provides the design its endurance, says Segal: “I feel it feels actually timeless and contemporary. So I really feel prefer it has aged very properly. To me, it nonetheless looks like we may have completed it yesterday.”
