From the Architect: “Set towards the stark shingle panorama of Dungeness, Westview Cottage replaces a worn Forties dwelling with a house that feels formed by the shoreline round it. When Tom and Yvette first purchased the home, it was darkish with low ceilings and closely altered, with a sequence of awkward extensions and little connection to its setting. Years of patchwork additions had left it structurally failing, however there was one thing in its improvised character they wished to carry onto. Their transient was to create three bedrooms, open the home up for household life and make higher use of the roof quantity, whereas reconnecting it to the panorama. Views to each the previous and new lighthouses grew to become key anchors within the design, alongside a indifferent outbuilding reworked as a versatile retreat for company, work, or quiet escape.
“Working throughout the footprint of the unique home, Hollaway Studio reconfigured the plan right into a sequence of related areas that open step by step to the horizon. On arrival, the home frames a direct view west in the direction of the brand new lighthouse, whereas dwelling, eating and kitchen areas unfold round shifting views of sea, backyard and sky. White-painted, charred timber, black corrugated aluminum and Cor-Ten metal mirror the weathered monochrome of Dungeness itself, whereas polished concrete flooring, made with regionally sourced mixture to match the encompassing shingle, convey the panorama indoors.”
