Century-old Melbourne corner shop transformed into family home

Native studio Kister Architects has turned a former 1910 nook store in Melbourne right into a household residence with a lush inside courtyard entrance designed to convey greenery to the city website.

Aptly named The Nook Store, Kister Architects tailored a “milk bar” that served the local people for over a century earlier than closing in 2016, later reopening as a sequence of cafe’s.

Situated on the nook of Murray and York streets in Melbourne’s Prahran suburb, the unique 287-square-metre nook store plot was mixed with a 90-square-metre website adjoining, which grew to become obtainable throughout building, making area for a backyard that was built-in into the plan.

Renovated by the studio’s founder Ilana Kister for herself and her daughters, the three-storey residence was designed to introduce components of nature and greenery to inner-city dwelling.

In a bid to protect the character and road presence of the unique store, Kister retained the shopfront facade and bottle-green tiles whereas changing street-facing home windows with glass bricks.

Elsewhere, the exterior palette combines gray and black render alongside silvertop ash timber cladding, interspersed with climbing vegetation and rooftop planting.

“Glass bricks protect the facade rhythm whereas fully altering how the openings perform,” Kister advised Dezeen.

“From the road, the constructing nonetheless reads as a nook store – from inside, the area fills with subtle dappled mild whereas sustaining privateness.”

The unique nook store entrance leads instantly onto a lush inside courtyard full of an array of vegetation.

Oak strains the flooring, partitions and ceilings, bringing heat and texture to the inside.

On the second flooring, there are three bedrooms, an en-suite, a household toilet and a dwelling area.

Timber panelling is paired with mossy-green carpets, whereas floor-to-ceiling home windows strengthening the connection between indoor and out of doors area.

In response to the studio, the color palette was intentionally restrained with a purpose to emphasise pure components.

On the third flooring, an open-plan kitchen, eating and dwelling space opens onto a silvertop ash deck overlooking Melbourne’s treetops and metropolis skyline.

The house additionally has a big again backyard full with an out of doors seating space, decking and a swimming pool.
