The Crump Theatre sits in a state of suspended animation. Its weathered jade inexperienced and cream facade gleams over third Avenue, in downtown Columbus, Indiana, the place “CRUMP” blazes vertically in vivid yellow letters. The marquee, trimmed in bulbs, evokes a bygone period of vaudeville and golden-age cinema. Quickly, the landmark will see the lights come up once more. Indianapolis-based structure and design agency DKGR Architects has been chosen to guide the Crump Middle for the Performing Arts’ long-awaited renovation, remodeling the 1889 constructing right into a 750-seat up to date performing arts and neighborhood venue.

The announcement marks a significant step in Columbus’s cultural redevelopment efforts. DKGR was chosen following a aggressive Request for {Qualifications} course of, which drew curiosity from regional and nationwide companies specializing in historic preservation and adaptive reuse. Three finalists introduced to neighborhood stakeholders on the theater in August.

“DKGR has a powerful portfolio of award-winning adaptive reuse tasks that honor the previous whereas creating areas for up to date cultural and civic life,” mentioned Steve Sanders, supervisor of Challenge Encore, the community-driven initiative to revive the Crump. “Their imaginative and prescient aligns completely with the Crump’s subsequent chapter—connecting our historical past to a thriving, inventive future that draws and retains expertise, and stimulates our downtown financial system.”

A 1941 renovation by architect Alden Meranda launched the theater’s present artwork deco aesthetic, with horizontal banding, daring lettering, and a glowing two-piece marquee. By a lot of the twentieth century, the Crump thrived as a film home and efficiency corridor, however by the 80s, competitors from suburban multiplexes and a downtown financial downturn left the theater struggling. Neighborhood preservation efforts prevented its demolition within the Nineteen Nineties, however structural deterioration and issues of safety pressured it to shut in 2014. That’s till nearly a decade later, in 2023 after a volunteer-led initiative cleaned and stabilized the mothballed theater, culminating within the Crump’s partial reopening for public excursions and small occasions.

The Crump was lately reactivated throughout Exhibit Columbus 2025. Through which Chicago-based agency Adaptive Operations unveiled Accessing Nostalgia, an set up that reinterpreted the theater;s historic cloth with reclaimed supplies and portraits of native volunteers who helped maintain it.

Now, the Crump’s revival is a part of a broader Columbus Downtown 2030 Plan, which identifies the location as a catalyst for downtown vibrancy and cultural development. The challenge additionally builds on the Envision Columbus (2018) framework and the Arts & Tradition Feasibility Research (2024).
