A masterplan for Newcastle Quay has been revealed, marking the ultimate stage in Newcastle’s three-decade foreshore transformation, with the precinct set to ship roughly 1,000 houses alongside mixed-use growth.

In keeping with a communique, SJB labored carefully with supply companion the DOMA Group to “set up a transparent city framework for the foreshore and its long-term evolution.” SJB is the masterplan and govt architect of the mission, whereas constructing ideas have been developed in collaboration with Stewart Structure, Structure AND and Curious Observe, with panorama design in collaboration with Turf Design Studio and planning by SJB Planning.

Alongside roughly 1,000 houses, the $1.6 billion precinct is about to ship greater than 11,000 sq. metres of public open area – comprising plazas, waterfront promenades and inexperienced area – greater than 28,000 sq. metres of economic area, 6,000 sq. metres of retail choices, a 180-room resort, and a 500-seat convention and exhibition centre built-in with the heritage-listed Wickham Faculty of Arts.

An announcement from SJB notes that the masterplan prioritises public life and connectivity by means of a fine-grain community of streets, laneways and public areas meant to reconnect the positioning to town and enhance public entry to the waterfront. The communique provides that the plan proposes a brand new waterfront park often called Honeysuckle Inexperienced and the Tree of Data Park, each of which intention to encourage public exercise alongside the harbour.

Associate at SJB Emily Wombwell mentioned the mission represents a shift in how town engages with its harbour. “It strikes the waterfront from the sting of town to its centre – creating a spot that’s open, lively and a part of on a regular basis life,” mentioned Wombwell.

“We approached Newcastle Quay as a chunk of city-making. With sturdy design rules that emphasise construction, how streets join, how public area is framed, and the way the precinct can evolve over time whereas sustaining a robust and legible identification.”

In keeping with a communique from Minister for Planning and Public Areas Paul Scully, the finished precinct is estimated to generate roughly $133 million annually for town and area.

Web site preparation works for the mission are anticipated to start in 2026.
