Lanza Atelier’s sinuous 2026 Serpentine Pavilion opens

The 2026 Serpentine Pavilion, designed by Mexico Metropolis-based apply Lanza Atelier, opens to the general public on 6 June.

Titled A Serpentine, the pavilion is the twenty-fifth fee within the Serpentine’s annual pavilion sequence. The design attracts inspiration from a serpentine or crinkle-crankle wall, a one-brick-thick undulating wall generally constructed throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a cheap resolution to the brick tax in place on the time.

The pavilion’s main materials is brick, comprising partitions, flooring and columns. The columns help a translucent roof with open sections that admit mild and air by the inside.

Lanza Atelier stated the mission was conceived as “a tool that each reveals and withholds,” with the association of bricks shifting from stable to permeable, enabling views by the wall.

“Impressed by the determine of the serpent as a generative and protecting drive, we draw a parallel with England’s winding fruit partitions, that are constructions that mood local weather, create shelter and allow development. From this concept emerges a pavilion constructed of straightforward clay brick, foregrounding vernacular craft and the fundamental capability of structure to convey folks collectively.”

Based in 2015 by Isabel Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo, Lanza Atelier’s portfolio spans structure, furnishings, exhibition and industrial design. This multidisciplinary strategy extends to the pavilion’s chairs and stools, produced from sapele hardwood and likewise designed by the studio.

Serpentine’s inventive director Hans Ulrich Obrist stated Lanza Atelier’s structure “at all times entails a deep engagement with the native context, supplies and lived expertise.”

The pavilion opens to the general public at London’s Serpentine South Gallery on 6 June.
