Prospect and refuge: These two themes have lengthy guided the work of Tom Kundig. Siting homes in a few of America’s most breathtaking but additionally rugged terrains, the AD100 architect takes care to create a deep sense of shelter—nestling buildings into hillsides, even blasting into rock—and engineer awe by sweeping vistas and intimate connections to nature. “Structure is just not the middle of the world,” he has usually stated. “It’s the panorama that’s the middle of the world for me.”

Now Kundig, a principal of the agency Olson Kundig, has translated those self same ideas to One&Solely Moonlight Basin, a brand new lodge and neighborhood of personal residences in Massive Sky, Montana. A one-hour drive from Bozeman, the resort settles into the northeastern aspect of majestic Lone Peak, on the fringe of an untamed forest. “It’s a ski mountain—but it surely’s additionally a giant mountain,” says the intrepid outdoorsman, who grew up snowboarding within the area along with his household. “That’s the magic of this place. You’re actually on the limits of a wild setting.”

Having traveled alongside the scenic Gallatin River, guests arrive to search out three broad lodges, throughout them a complete of 73 rooms and suites. From there, buildings break down in scale, with 19 freestanding visitor cabins, plus a set of four- to six-bedroom houses. That every one of it recedes into the alpine environment is a testomony to Kundig’s delicate contact. Impressed by Japanese vernacular traditions, he prioritized the usage of dark-stained wooden, a cloth that, he says, “quiets the structure into the shadows of timber, permitting the mountain colours to pop.” True to that spirit, the low-slung volumes seem to burrow into the greenery, their broad flat roofs studying as dashed traces throughout the verdant expanse.
